Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia

The Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia is a high-alpine trekking route through one of the wildest and most remote areas of the Alps. With its spectacular views and its varied landscape from the rough glaciers of the Forno basin to the almost mediterrranean climate of the Lago di Como area, it’s truly an outstanding multi-day hike. The route leads over three passes from the Swiss Val Bregaglia to the Italian Val Codera. Five mountain huts are ideally located at the end of each stage: the Capanna del Forno (Forno Hut), the Capanna da l'Albigna (Albigna Hut), the Capanna di Sciora (Sciora Hut), the Capanna Sasc Furä (Sasc Furä Hut) and the Rifugio Luigi Brasca (Luigi Brasca Hut). The hut wardens are well-known for their hospitality, making each stay a unique experience. The Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia can be done in its full length of six days from Maloja to Novate Mezzola or in shorter sections; four days are needed for the northeast section from Maloja to Bondo / Promontogno, three days are needed for the southwest section from Bondo / Promontogno to Novate Mezzola. It`s highly reccomended to follow the trail in the described direction.

Requirements: The Sentiero Alpino Bregaglia is a very demanding alpine hiking trek. The difficulties reach a hiking grade of T5 and requires experienced hikers who can walk safely in exposed and difficult terrain where the path sometimes leads over steep passes and through huge block and scree fields. PDF

Best time: From mid-July to end of September is usually the best time. As the passes may still be covered in snow early in the season, an ice axe and crampons are recommended. The hut wardens are glad to give you information about the current conditions.

Maloja – Capanna del Forno

Distance: 10,8km / Ascent: 1100m / Descent: 325m

Follow the paved private road (several shortcuts possible) to the well known Lägh da Cavloc. Several picnic spots and a restaurant can be found on the lake shore. Shortly after the lake you reach Alp Cavloc (goat cheese for sale). The road now continues as a foot path to Plan Canin where the Val Forno and the Val Muretto meet. At the signpost go left towards the Murettopass. About halfway you`ll find another signpost leading you to the right and towards the Forno Hut. The following part of thre trail is called the Panoramaweg – for a reason! Magnificient mountain lakes alternate with splendid views of the Forno Valley and the surrounding summits. After a short but steeper section the path flattens again as you now find yourself at the foot of Monte Forno. From the big lake (Point 2728) you will reach the Forno Hut (2574m) in 30 to 40 minutes on a slight descent.
